History of Computational Science Research Center
The Computational Science Research Center (CSRC) has its roots in the Research Computer System (RCS) Project, initiated by the College of Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1992. This project, funded by the Engineering and Science Education Project of the Department of Science and Technology (ESEP-DOST) in collaboration with the World Bank, laid the groundwork for what would become the CSRC. ESEP-DOST provided hardware and network infrastructure, while the University of the Philippines committed to constructing a dedicated building for the system.
The primary mission of the CSRC is to provide computing support to researchers and graduate students engaged in various scientific fields, including information systems development, modeling, and simulations. The center’s facilities are also available to researchers and students from other academic institutions, as well as professionals from government agencies and industry sectors, fostering collaborative research efforts.
One of CSRC’s flagship initiatives is the PhD Data Science program, overseen and coordinated by the center in collaboration with the College of Science. This program aims to train professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet industry demands and contribute to advancements in data science through research.
With affiliate faculty members from different institutes within the College of Science, the CSRC serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration in scientific computing, data science, and high-performance computing. The center aims to facilitate research and development activities while supporting the creation of data-driven solutions and applications.
